What to Do with an Old Computer: Seven Second Lives, One First Step
RedKey USBShare
Too slow for everyday work rarely means useless. An old laptop or desktop can take on a single job at home, help someone who has no computer, or be sold or recycled properly. The only wrong answer is leaving it in a cupboard with your old life still on the drive.
Our guides to erasing old laptops and wiping retired computers are written for organisations. This one is for a household deciding what to do with one machine.
What should I do first with an old computer?
Wipe it. If it is staying with you, a clean start removes years of clutter and makes it faster. If it is leaving, a proper erase stops your files going with it.
- Back up anything you still want.
- Sign out of your accounts: Microsoft or Apple, Google, browsers and cloud storage.
- Erase the drive: Windows reset with clean data, Erase All Content and Settings on supported Macs, or a bootable erasure tool for older machines and desktops with several drives.
- Install the operating system the computer needs for its new job.
1. Can an old computer become a media server?
Yes. With media server software and enough storage, an old desktop can stream your films, TV and music to televisions, phones and tablets around the house.
Desktops that can stay switched on and have space for extra drives suit this best.
2. Can I use it for backups and shared storage?
An old PC with two or more drives makes a decent home network storage box for family photos and backups, using free network storage software. Keep an off-site or cloud copy as well, because one box at home is not a complete backup.
3. What home network jobs can an old PC do?
It can block adverts and trackers across your network, act as a firewall with parental filtering, or run a home automation hub. Free guides make these projects approachable for anyone who enjoys tinkering.
Bear in mind that a full desktop running all day uses noticeably more electricity than a small dedicated device, so compare the running costs.
4. Should I try Linux on an old computer?
If it cannot run Windows 11, a lightweight Linux distribution can give it years of supported, secure use. It is also a safe place to learn Linux, practise coding or build a home lab without touching your main computer.
Our article on Windows end of support explains why staying on an unsupported version is a risk.
5. Can it become a retro gaming machine?
Yes. Older games that misbehave on current Windows often run happily on the hardware they were made for. Keep a machine with an unsupported operating system offline, and never use it for email, banking or browsing.
6. Who could use my old computer?
Students, older relatives and families without a device at home. Charities and community schemes across the UK refurbish computers and pass them on, and most welcome machines that have already been wiped.
Wipe it regardless of what the scheme says it will do. Your data is your responsibility until it is gone.
7. Should I sell or recycle it?
Sell it if it still works well, or recycle it through your council, a retailer take-back scheme or a manufacturer programme if it does not. Never put electronics in the household bin.
For selling, see our checklist for selling an old laptop or PC or the gaming PC version. For recycling, see Recycling an Old Computer in the UK. If the computer is dead and its drive cannot be erased, remove the drive and have it destroyed before recycling the rest.
How does RedKey USB help with an old computer?
RedKey USB Home starts the computer from USB and erases its disks, including the operating system disk, without relying on the old system. It works on most Intel and AMD PCs from around 2000 and most Intel-based Macs from 2006 to 2020.
That covers the machines most likely to be sitting in a cupboard. The result appears on screen, and because RedKey is a one-time purchase with unlimited use, the same key handles the next old computer too.
